What Is a REBA Assessment?

REBA, or Rapid Entire Body Assessment, is an observational ergonomic method used to evaluate whole-body working posture. It considers the neck, trunk, legs, upper arms, lower arms and wrists, together with load or force, coupling and activity factors. It is commonly used where work is dynamic, variable or physically demanding and the posture of the whole body contributes to ergonomic risk.
REBA is especially useful when an employee changes posture throughout the task, handles equipment or loads, works at different heights, bends or twists, or adopts unstable or constrained positions. As with any ergonomic scoring system, the number is only one part of the assessment. The result needs to be interpreted alongside the real work process, frequency, duration, forces and operational environment.

How the REBA Assessment Process Works

The ergonomist first reviews the work cycle and identifies the posture or task phase that represents the relevant exposure. A REBA score is then developed using the observed body positions, load or force, coupling and activity factors. Where the task contains several materially different postures, additional observations may be assessed so the report does not depend on a single moment that is unrepresentative of the job.

The assessment should also identify why the posture occurs. For example, trunk flexion may be caused by a low pallet position, an unsuitable work surface, restricted access or the way material is presented to the worker. Identifying the cause is what allows the organisation to move from a score to a practical control.

Interpreting a REBA Score

The REBA score provides an indication of the level of ergonomic action that may be required. Higher scores generally indicate that the observed task should receive greater attention. The score is useful for prioritisation, but it should not be read in isolation or treated as a medical conclusion.

Practical Controls After a REBA Assessment

Recommendations focus first on changing the task or environment. Depending on the cause, this may include raising or lowering work, improving access, repositioning materials, introducing lift or handling aids, reducing unnecessary floor-level work, changing storage design, modifying tooling, improving component presentation or reducing the need for twisting and long reaches.

Where several controls are possible, the report can distinguish quick wins from engineering changes that require more planning. This helps the organisation convert the assessment into an action plan with clear ownership rather than leaving the score as a standalone finding.

REBA Compared with RULA and Manual Handling Assessment

REBA and RULA are complementary methods. RULA is more focused on upper-limb and upper-body posture and is often well suited to constrained or hand-intensive work. REBA provides a broader whole-body perspective and is often selected for dynamic physical tasks. Where lifting is the main exposure, a manual handling assessment or a method such as the NIOSH lifting equation may also be required. The correct approach depends on the task.
