Network operations centres and data centre control rooms are different from ordinary office environments. Users may work long shifts, share workstations, monitor several screens and need immediate visibility of information while responding to operational events.

Multi-monitor layouts

More screens do not automatically create better visibility. If frequently used information is spread across wide viewing angles or stacked too high, users may repeatedly rotate the neck or hold the head in an elevated position.

Assessment can review monitor priority, height, distance, curvature, viewing angle and the relationship between screens and input devices.

24/7 operation and shared workstations

Shared desks must be quick to adjust. If chair, desk, monitor or input-device changes are difficult, users are more likely to accept a poor setup for the shift.

A NOC review can assess whether adjustment ranges suit the user population and whether the setup process is simple enough to be followed consistently.

Seated duration and sit/stand use

Long seated periods can create discomfort even where the workstation is well adjusted. Sit/stand capability can help introduce variation, but only if screen height, input devices and work processes remain suitable in both positions.

Recommendations can include postural variation, movement opportunities, micro-breaks or task rotation where the work allows.

Reach, input devices and visibility

Frequently used keyboards, pointing devices, phones, radios and control devices should be positioned to limit repeated or sustained reaching. Visibility of alarms, dashboards and secondary screens should also be considered in relation to posture and task priority.

Lighting and environmental factors

Control rooms may need lower ambient lighting for screen visibility, but glare, reflections and large brightness differences can still create visual demand. Lighting review can form part of the workstation assessment alongside temperature, noise and other environmental factors where relevant.

Shift patterns and work organisation

Ergonomics does not replace fatigue management, but shift patterns and task organisation can affect how long users remain in static positions and how often they can vary activity.

Where appropriate, findings can include task rotation, movement opportunities and changes to how shared workstations are handed over between users.

Design around information priority

Control rooms often accumulate displays over time. The result can be a large visual field in which users repeatedly turn or tilt the head to view high-priority information. A better approach is to identify which screens are referenced continuously, which are used periodically and which are primarily for shared situational awareness. The workstation can then be arranged around information priority. This reduces unnecessary movement without compromising visibility of the wider operational picture.

Adjustment must be fast enough to be used

Shared workstations are successful only when adjustment is simple. If a user needs several minutes to change chair, desk and monitor positions, there is a strong chance the workstation will remain in the previous user’s configuration. Clear setup guidance and a small number of repeatable steps can make a larger difference than adding more equipment.

Input devices and communications equipment

NOC users may work with keyboards, mice, trackballs, phones, radios and other controls. Devices that are frequently used should be positioned within easy reach and should not force users to maintain asymmetric shoulder or wrist postures. Where several devices compete for desk space, the assessment can help decide which items need primary placement and which can move to a secondary zone.

Lighting for screen-intensive work

A control room needs enough light for safe movement and paperwork while avoiding glare and strong reflections on displays. Large differences in brightness between screens and the surrounding environment can also increase visual demand. Assessment can review screen orientation, window or luminaire reflections, local lighting and user feedback. Where specialist lighting measurements are required, these can be coordinated with the broader ergonomic review.

Postural variation during long shifts

No seated posture is ideal when held continuously for many hours. The workstation should support small changes in position, and the work should allow movement where operationally possible. Sit/stand desks can help, but users still need correct monitor and input-device setup in both positions. Where standing is not practical, task rotation, brief movement and intentional posture changes can help reduce prolonged static exposure.

Design and refurbishment projects

NOC ergonomics is particularly valuable before a refurbishment or new control room is finalised. Console depth, screen layout, sight lines, furniture adjustment and lighting can be reviewed early. A mock-up or representative workstation can then be tested with users before full deployment. This is generally more efficient than discovering after installation that displays are too high, controls are out of reach or the workstation cannot accommodate the user population.

Creating a consistent NOC workstation standard

For larger operations, the output can be converted into a NOC workstation standard covering adjustment range, monitor zones, desk depth, input-device placement, lighting considerations and the setup process at shift change. A standard gives design and procurement teams clear requirements when workstations are replaced and gives operators a consistent way to configure them. It can also reduce variation between sites where the same monitoring function is performed in different facilities. The standard should remain flexible enough to accommodate individual needs, but it provides a controlled baseline that can be tested during future refurbishments or new control-room projects.

What the NOC review can deliver

Depending on scope, the deliverable can include workstation observations, a recommended monitor hierarchy, shared-desk adjustment guidance, furniture or equipment requirements, lighting observations and a prioritised action list. Where a refurbishment is planned, the same criteria can be used to review proposed furniture or a mock-up before wider purchase. For multi-site teams, the output can also provide a baseline NOC standard that is reused across locations while allowing specific operational displays and local constraints to be accommodated.

Follow-up after workstation changes

A follow-up review can confirm that users are applying the new setup correctly and that any furniture, monitor or layout changes have achieved the intended improvement.
