Cyprus does not have a single “ergonomics act,” but ergonomics regulation is integrated into its Minimum Requirements for Safety and Health at Work with Visual Display Screen Equipment Regulations of 2001 (R.A.A. 455/2001), as well as its Safety and Health at Work Law of 1996 (89(I)/1996).

The Duties of
The Employer

Regulation 4 - Risk assessment
(1) Every employer must provide for the analysis of work positions for employees who are present for the assessment of safety and health conditions, especially regarding possible risks to vision, physical problems, and mental stress.
(2) Every employer must take appropriate measures to address the risks found based on the assessment of paragraph (1), taking into account the additional and/or combined effects of the identified risks. -
Regulation 5 - Obligations of manufacturers, importers, suppliers
Manufacturers, importers, and any kind of suppliers of visual display equipment must comply with—
(a) They must comply in the market with visual display equipment manufactured in accordance with current provisions for health and safety at work and health and without risks for health and safety at work,
(b) They must provide written information and instructions in the Greek language regarding the risks they present so that they can be publicized during use of products and for the ways to address them. -
Regulations 6 and 7
1. EQUIPMENT
1.1. General observation. The use of this equipment itself must not present any risk to employees.
1.2. Visual display equipment
1.2.1. The characters on the display must be clearly formed and with clear dimensions. There must be adequate spacing between characters and letters to maintain appropriate spacing.
1.2.2. The image on the display must be stable, without trembling or other forms of instability.
1.2.3. The brightness and/or contrast of the characters and the background must be easily adjustable by the user and easily adaptable to the conditions of the surrounding environment.
1.2.4. The display must be able to be rotated and tilted easily and freely to adjust to the user's needs. For this purpose, it must be possible to use a separate base or adjustable table for the display.
1.2.5. The positioning of the display in relation to light sources of the work area must ensure the avoidance of reflections and glare on the display.
1.3. Keyboard
1.3.1. The keyboard must be of tilting and independent slope and must be possible for the employee to provide for the minimum handling of hands and arms of the user.
1.3.2. The free space in front of the keyboard must have the possibility of arm rest adjustment.
1.3.3. The keyboard surface must be matte to avoid reflections.
1.3.4. The arrangement of the keyboard and the characteristics of the keys must facilitate keyboard use.
1.3.5. The symbols of the keys must be clearly visible from the user's normal position at the keyboard. 1.4. Work surface.
1.4.1. The work surface must have low reflectivity, adequate dimensions and allow flexible arrangement of the display, keyboard, documents, and auxiliary equipment.
1.4.2. The document holder must be stable, adjustable, and placed so that the annoying head and eye movements of the user are limited.
1.4.3. There must be adequate space available so that employees can take a comfortable standing position.
1.5. Work seat.
1.5.1. The work seat must provide stability to the employee, freedom of movement, and allow them to practice comfortable standing posture.
1.5.2. The height of the seat must be adjustable.
1.5.3. The back of the seat must have the possibility of adjustment as to its height and tilt.
1.5.4. For employees who wish to do so, footrests are provided for the legs.
2. ENVIRONMENT
2.1. Space
The work position must be arranged so as to ensure adequate space to allow the employee to change body position and movements during work.
2.2. Lighting
2.2.1. The general and/or local lighting must ensure satisfactory lighting conditions and adequate contrast between the display and the optical field in mind from that nature of work and the optical requirements of the user.
2.2.2. Annoying reflections and flash reflections on the display or elsewhere must be avoided by another device, with appropriate arrangement of spaces and work positions and selection of technical characteristics of the artificial lighting.
2.3. Reflections and glare.
2.3.1. Work positions must be positioned so that light sources, such as windows and other openings, transparent or translucent walls, as well as brightly colored equipment or walls do not cause glare on the display and do not create reflections on the display.
2.3.2. Windows must be equipped with appropriate adjustable blinds or other system for adjusting daylight intensity on the display.
2.4. Noise
Noise from equipment must not distract the attention or disturb the speech of work positions. Equipment must be arranged so that it is ensured that it will be limited in the most moderate way and noise is avoided.
2.5. Temperature
The equipment of work positions must not produce excessive heat, which may cause discomfort to employees.
2.6. Humidity
Humidity must be regulated and maintained at a satisfactory level.
2.7. Radiation
Any radiation, except for the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum, must be limited to negligible levels, so as to avoid adverse effects on the health and safety of employees.
3. CONNECTION OF ELECTRONIC COMPUTER/PERSON
For the development, selection, procurement, and modification of software as well as for the design of tasks of employees using visual display equipment, the employer must take into account the following:
3.1. The software must be adapted to the work it will perform.
3.2. The software must be easy to use and, where appropriate, adaptable to the user's level of knowledge and experience. 3.3. No quantitative or qualitative control of the produced work may be applied without the knowledge of the employees.
3.4. The systems must provide employees with instructions for their operation.
3.5. The systems must present the information in a format and at a rhythm adapted to the operators and must not display important information at the edges of the display.
3.6. The basic principles of ergonomics must be applied, especially in the processing of information, by people. -
Regulation 8 - Information and training of employees
On matters of information and training of employees, every employer must—
(a) Provide information to employees regarding health and safety in their work position, especially regarding applicable measures for work positions, especially regarding measures that apply under Regulations 4, 9, and 11 of these Regulations: It is understood that employees or their representatives are informed about all measures related to safety and health and their application under these Regulations;
(b) Provide training for the method of use of visual display equipment before the commencement of this type of work and each time the organization of the work position is substantially modified. -
Regulation 11 - Protection of eyes and sight
(1) The employer has the obligation to ensure that every employee undergoes—
an appropriate ophthalmological examination for the protection of eyes and sight, if the employer is informed of the results of the examination of paragraph (1) or (2) that this examination shows that specialized ophthalmological care is required for chronic conditions, eye examination systems, including special corrective devices required, for use in work with visual display equipment.
(2) Employees who undergo a proper ophthalmological examination to be submitted to if the results of the examination of paragraph (1) or (2) show that this examination.
(3) The employer must provide for examination from manufacturers, importers, suppliers of visual display equipment, necessary information for the risk assessment of paragraph (1).

Regulation 15 - Duties of employees
(1) Every employee while at work shall-
(a) take resonable care to ensure the safety and health of himself and of other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work
(b) cooperate with his employer in the discharge of any requirement or duty imposed upon the employer under this law
